第一年大學暑假時，她有機會回去Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Lab，作癌症治療的研究。第二年時，便入了MIT 痳省理工學院作治癌有關的Stem Cell 研究。當她成功申請到再次暑期研究獎學金可回Sloan Cancer Center，一切的門都好像為她大開時，校方醫生從她一次檢查血液中看到了新的不正常細胞出現。第二天從醫院的骨髓驗查中證實，她確實患了骨髓性急性血癌。
